What Difference Does a Name Make?

1.       Emancipation Proclamation Act of 1863

2.       The Emancipation Proclamation was a anouncement and notice Emancipating all Black Slaves in the Confederate Sates which were located in the South of the United Sates. The President at the time was Abraham Lincoln and he announced the new bill during the time of the Civil War when 11 U.S states succeeded from the Union. In the Act it states, "That all persons held as slaves within the rebellious areas are, and henceforward shall be free."

3.       The Emancipation Proclamation was proposed in 1863, then was fully ratified towards the end of the war in 1865 as the Confederate South surrendered to the Union North
4.       Important events going on at that time was the Civil War between the North and the South United States. At this time Black people transported from Africa were being used as slaves in America.

5.       African American Slaves and Abolitionist favored this movement. The reason why they favored it was the reason of ending slavery. It has been the Abolitionist goal to abolish slavery, meaning to end it, and this Act was an announcement to end slavery in the South. African American Slaves favored this for the obvious reason of freedom.

6.       Slave owners, and peoples of the Confederate States of America (11 states in the south of the United States) opposed this Act. Because slavery was a source of labor that strengthened the Southern economy. Without Slaves many white southerners would lose business in the plantations they owned. They also believed that this act was disrespectful to their States Rights and felt that they Federal Government in the North should have no power over them.

7.       This Act had huge impact on how people were starting to view Blacks in the United States. Now more people were starting to see Blacks, not as property but more as people. However there was great hatred and animosity for Blacks in the South, and it was not safe for escaped Slaves or any Black person to live in the South during that time.

8.       The title of the Act is truthful because it didn’t legally free Slaves in the South but it did announce and was a Proclamation of freedom for slaves living in the South.

9.       Black Slaves and White Southerners

10.   Abolitionist

11.   White Southerners. Although they oppose the rule as a whole they can argue more with a name like Emancipation Proclamation. Because the act wasn’t a legal act, it was an announcement of Emancipation for Black Slaves. Meaning, although the North said that Slaves were free, the Confederacy could still withhold slaves.

12.   Abolitionist would fight to change the name because even though it was a proclamation of freedom towards black Slaves it did not end slavery in the United States which was the goal of Abolitionist.  A good title that abolitionist would use, would be the End of Slavery Act 1863. This title clearly states that there would be an end to slavery instead of just saying a group of people would be “proclaimed” free.

Noris 5

Students protest in London, Conservative HQ attacked

Informative vs. Superficial: The article was very informative describing the, who British government and Student protestors, what, protesting raise of tuition fees, where, London England, when this November, and why, to voice their feelings on the government’s decision to raise the tuition fees of Universities in England.
- Accurate and Truthful vs False and Deceptive: There article is accurate and truth full because although a small article there are still some key facts and numbers presented that legitimizes the situation. Also in the Article there are quotations such as, "We are taking to the streets in unprecedented numbers to tell politicians that enough is enough," NUS president Aaron Porter said in a statement before the demonstration” which is factual evidence that what they are protesting is fact and not twisted.

- Objective vs Biased: Although the article might seem biased, in a sense it’s really objective. The reason why is because the writer condones the violence but is being very neutral. For example in the beginning he talks about how the protestors were throwing flairs ECT, but then he explains why their behavior was violent and how they were peaceful demonstrators at first.
- Pluralistic vs Insular Viewpoint: Because the problem itself focuses and affects Universities it is a very important issue on a global scale. This issue not only affects the people and the government of London, but also affects the international community who are applying to these schools in London. Also has a great affect on tourism of London because if people see London as unstable then not many people would like to travel there. And because this is a popular international city many readers will find this article interesting.
- Balanced vs Weighted Side
The article was more weighted in the sense that it appealed more to viewers who condemn violence and so the Student Protestors as violent kids.

Plain Jane - Dove Evolution

Watching the Dove Evolution video I was very surprised as I got to look behind the scenes of bill board modeling. What grabbed my attention was the fact that before the makeup and the editing, the woman was just a plain Jane and there wasn’t anything special about her. And that’s are probably how most girls feel about themselves, that they are not special enough because they don’t look as beautiful as the girls on the billboards. What I find ironic is that there is nothing real about the girls on the billboards and that it is a plain Jane who’s simply beautiful.  But with more billboard pictures like that one it is difficult for girls to feel natural because they think it’s not enough to be on the top of a billboard or anywhere else. This problem of girl’s confidence reminds me of a song by the Canadian artist Drake. A verse in his song “Best I’ve ever had” states, “Sweat pants, hair tied, chilling with no makeup on, that’s when you’re the prettiest, I hope you don’t take it wrong”. Drake is saying to the ladies that they don’t have to be like those fake bill board models to be beautiful in life, I mean models don’t look like that every day right? All in all products that sell make up and use models to advertise their products are giving a negative image to not only girls at a you age, but woman as well.

Stereotypes in late and Modern KFC commercial in America and Australia

Who is communicating in these ads? The people who are communicating are the owners of KFC, who have
Who is communicating in these ads? The people who are communicating are the owners of KFC, who have newly created the Popcorn chicken. In the second video, Australian owners of KFC are saying; buy KFC if you need to get out of awkward or bad situations with Black people because they can’t resist fried chicken.
Who are they talking about? The Owners of KFC are saying because black people love fried chicken so much, they will absolutely love this product. Black people can’t live without fried chicken and that they won’t do anything unless they get the last bite of chicken. In the Australian Ad they are communicating to the whites that you can use this product not only for consuming but getting yourself out of awkward situations with Black people. In the beginning of the Ad you notice how there’s a logo which states, “Cricket Survival Guide” insinuating that Black people dangerous in crowds and the only way to survive is to tame them is giving them what they want, golden fried chicken.
Why are they using this approach? They are playing with the Stereotype that Black people are addicted to Fried Chicken.  Because of such ads like these, it’s a common misconception that the only thing Black people eat are Fried Chicken, because there are many Black people who either are vegetarian, or don’t like fried chicken or chose to eat their own traditional food. In the MC hammer one they are not only using the stereotype of diet, but also the hip hop trend, appealing to younger generations.  In the Australia one, they use this message to attract white minorities.

Merchants of Cool

Imagine that your parents are too busy for you, because they work all the time. They always miss your soccer games, and never pay attention to the small things you do. Your parents realize that they are neglecting you so what do they do, they give you a weekly allowance, or buy that special thing you’ve been wanting. Adults feel bad about neglecting their child, so instead they either pay them up front or buy what they want, and this tends to be known as guilt money. A great way to back up my claim is by creating a survey to children who have busy parents. Although guilt money parents are a big income for a teen, many teens find other ways to make money. There are many responsible teens who find jobs, but with the low wager pay this sometimes does not satisfy them. Marketers ideal picture of parents is false, and doesn’t include parents primarily families from poor backgrounds. The reason why they leave them out is because the parents income isn’t enough to satisfy their income.

"Tomorrow Never Dies" Getting Tomorrows News Today

This maybe science fiction but after recently watching James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies" it intrigued me, the idea that you can get tomorrows news today. In this James Bond movie there was this media tycoon played by Jonathan Pryce, who was able to change the news via satellite and could distribute it all over the world in a matter of hours. (Pryce) was almost able to start World War 3 by pitting China and Great Britain against each other using the news as his secret weapon. After thinking about it I came to the conclusion that technology these days allows anyone, even from the comfort of their own home to broadcast news even only, after a second it happened. I predict in the future like in James Bond, terrorist will use media as a way to attack more victims, and this could be more serious than any rocket or bomb. In fact today online predators use the internet to hack into government databases stealing top secret information. Media in the wrong hands can be used for in justice and we should be careful how we use it, and what information we give out.
